No one community stands alone in times of tragedy as was evident in March of 1938 when communities in west central Alberta were shocked as an underground explosion in a mine at Hinton claimed the lives of five men and injured five others. Hundreds of mourners from Hinton, Drinnan and Edson formed one of the longest funeral processions to Glenwood Cemetery. Edson Stores were closed during this time as a mark of respect for the bereaved families. Later in July of that year, townspeople and miners attended the unveiling of an eleven-foot obelisk monument in the Glenwood Cemetery at Edson, where it stands tall today in memory of those who lost their lives in the Hinton Mine Disaster.
